TV GUIDES
So much TV. So little time to watch. From unscripted to (loosely) based-on-a-true-story dramatizations, here’s what you should be watching for True Crime month.
THE DROPOUT (Hulu)
Why: Absolutely riveting performances. I have to admit…I missed the whole Theranos news extravaganza, then I watched the doc, but was a pretty blank slate when it came to this story. It is a strange confluence of tech meets medicine while you are on the edge of your seat. The music is spectacular (thank you, Maggie Phillips) and Amanda Seyfried wins the Emmy for her performance which is BEYOND deserving. Do yourself a favor and re/watch now!

UNDER THE BANNER OF HEAVEN (FX / Hulu)
Why: I absolutely couldn’t stop watching when it came out As a matter of fact, I watched the whole thing in one day. Pro tip, if you haven’t checked it out yet, I don’t recommend the one day watch (it’s just way too intense), but I couldn’t stop myself. It’s so well done (that Andrew Garfield, he’s going places), and is a particular cross section of genres I can’t turn away from… true crime and cults. Side rec if you also need to watch all the cult stories, make sure to check out Stolen Youth: Inside the Cult at Sarah Lawrence on Hulu after you finish Under the Banner of Heaven.

PAM & TOMMY (Hulu)
Why: I had heard of the Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee sex tape before watching, but I never would’ve guessed that the story behind the scandal would be even crazier than the scandal itself. Pam & Tommy takes us on a wild ride, showing us the true story of how the infamous tape was leaked and the aftermath of one of the first major internet sensations. Plus, the transformations of Lily James and Sebastian Stan into Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee alone make it worth the watch.

FYRE FRAUD (Hulu)
Why: With Fyre Festival II on the horizon, it feels like the perfect time to revisit this doc from 2019. As someone who puts on a festival every year, I found the behind-the-scenes of what happened at the infamous Fyre Festival in 2017 equal parts traumatizing and fascinating. There are so many twists and turns, and the fact that Billy McFarland is just out of jail and about to do it all again is astonishing. To see how it all unfolded and to hear from Billy himself make it obvious that the headlines and news stories could never do justice to what actually happened on that island.

AMERICAN CRIME STORY: THE ASSASSINATION OF GIANNI VERSACE (FX / Hulu)
Why: The first installment in the American Crime Story series, The People vs. O.J. Simpson, set a high bar — but to it’s credit, The Assassination of Gianni Versace set out to do something very different, and arguably just as ambitious. With Tom Rob Smith (London Spy) at the helm; a stacked cast including Darren Criss, Edgar Ramirez, Penelope Cruz, and a heartbreaking turn from Cody Fern; and the series’ layered exploration of queer culture in the ’90s — this chapter of ACS is absolutely worth the watch.

ONLY MURDERS IN THE BUILDING (Hulu)
Season 3 is airing now and I’m so behind! I didn’t think the cast could get better… we had Martin Short, Steve Martin and Selena…but now we have Meryl Streep and Paul Rudd! Love love love the crossover of broadway actors, music, and style… definitely makes me want to walk by the Apthorp building in NYC and pretend I can see them in all their windows. As a bonus, the podcast cast thread makes me want to restart old classics like Serial.

THE JEWEL THIEF (Hulu)
It’s relatively rare to get a first-hand account of a crime from the perpetrator, but Hulu’s The Jewel Thief does exactly that — the true story of Gerald Blanchards “decades long crime spree [that] ranged from shoplifting to bank robbery to the theft of a royal crown jewel,” featuring Blanchard himself. If that’s not enough to get you hooked, the trailer certainly will. (Plus, it’s less than two hours!)

STILL UP (Apple TV+)
As a rom-com enthusiast, I often find myself wishing that TV had more options in that genre — and Still Up promises to be an extremely compelling entry. The logline? “Bonded by insomnia, best friends Lisa and Danny stay connected to each other late into the night and find their way through a world of wonderfully weird surprises as their relationship deepens.” Yeah — this one’s for the rom-com girlies (gender-neutral).
